Ductless Mini-Split Installation in San Francisco
A mini-split gives you heating and cooling without ductwork. In a city where most of the housing predates central air entirely, that is not a compromise. It is usually the only sensible answer.
When a mini-split is the right call
- The building has no ductwork and never did
- One room is always too cold or too hot
- You want to condition a converted garage, attic or in-law unit
- Running ducts would mean opening finished walls and ceilings
- You want rooms controlled independently rather than together
What the job involves
Systems
- Single-zone for one room
- Multi-zone running several heads off one condenser
- Wall-mounted, floor-mounted and ceiling cassette heads
- Heat-pump units that both heat and cool
The install
- Siting the condenser and planning the line run
- Core drilling and line-set routing
- Electrical supply and disconnect
- Condensate drainage
- Commissioning and controls
Where the condenser goes matters more than the brand
On a San Francisco lot the outdoor unit usually has to go somewhere awkward: a light well, a side setback, a flat roof. That decision drives the line run, the noise your neighbor hears and how serviceable the thing is in five years. Near the ocean it also decides how fast salt air eats the coil. We work that out on the free visit, before any equipment is quoted.
Common questions
How many rooms can one system cover?
A multi-zone condenser typically runs up to four or five indoor heads, each controlled separately. Whether that suits you depends on the layout and how far the line runs have to travel, which is what we work out on site.
Which brands do you install?
Fujitsu, Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric are the lines we work with most for ductless. All three make equipment we are happy to put our name on.
Do they heat as well as cool?
The heat-pump models do, and in this climate that is usually the point. You get heating for most of the year and cooling for the handful of weeks you need it.
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. We come out, look at the actual job, and quote it. That free visit is how we price everything. Pricing a job properly usually means seeing it, which is why we do not give firm numbers over the phone.
Do you cover my area?
We work across San Francisco, the Peninsula and the East Bay. If you are not sure whether you are in range, call and ask. The answer is usually yes.
